It’s that time of the year: time to think about what to buy for your dad.

Here’s a few ideas, pulled from the various gadgets that we get to look at throughout the year.

Jabra Drive

Does dad drive? Does he have a mobile phone? The Jabra Drive is an inexpensive hands free speakerphone that connects to his mobile phone using bluetooth. Remember that it’s illegal to hold your phone while your in charge of a motor vehicle, and heavy fines and a loss of demerit points may ensue if you’re caught. For less than $60, you’ll not only be helping your dad to obey the law, but you’ll also be helping him to enjoy his motoring in greater safety.

For the coffee-aholic dad in your family, how about the Nespresso Pixie? This is a compact, one touch coffee machine, that can make your cup of coffee in less than a minute. It’s a truly fuss free, mess free way of getting your hit of coffee, at any time of the day.

Pixie Nespresso

If dad already has a cappuccino machine, or if you think that the Pixie isn’t quite enough, perhaps the Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother might be a nice idea? Inexpensive, it’s a simple and elegant way of frothing up your milk for that perfect latte or cappuccino.

Maybe dad fancies himself as a bit of a shutterbug? Be sure to check out the Olympus Pen EP-3. This is a camera that’s small, but not too small. At the basic level it offers the advantages of interchangeable lenses and a relatively large sensor size, which means that your image quality will benefit as a result. but ease of use is a big feature here as well: it sports a touch screen interface, that lets you see, on the screen, the image that you’re going to capture. Touch the screen in the area where you want the image to be focused, and the camera will automatically focus at that location, and then take the photo for you. How cool is that?

Pen E-P3

Does dad need a new mobile phone? If your dad’s well into social networking and Facebook, maybe something like HTC’s Cha Cha or Salsa might be of interest? These are both very nicely featured smartphones running under the Android operating system, but specially developed for allowing the owner to interact with Facebook.

If they’re beyond your budget, maybe take a look at Huawei’s Sonic or Ideos X1 – perfectly inexpensive smartphones that are also running under the Android operating system, but very keenly priced.

It’s barely forty eight hours since the tragic bombing and shootings in Oslo, and guess what?

Yep, the lowlifes are already at it, trying to put their hands into your pockets.

So, be wary of any emails that turn up in your inbox promising to show you video of the bombing, or the shootings, or asking you to click on an embedded link within the email promising that you may be able to easily donate to assist those affected by these sad events.

The only thing sad is that these lowlifes actually are alive and walking on this earth, sharing the good air that the rest of us breathe.

And besides, why on earth would you want to see these videos anyway? Are you sick? No? Good, I didn’t think so.

If you want to donate, then please do so, but do so through a recognised charity and website, rather than because some sleazy greedy piece of crap sends you a link to a fake website to try to scam you.

And just to preempt things a little, yes, by midnight tonight we will also start to see the Amy Winehouse scams starting to appear. Trust me, those, too, may be safely deleted.

Over the last few days, I’ve seen some good, and some bad, uses of social media by businesses, and I thought that it might be a good idea to explore these concepts.

First of all let’s understand a couple of key points: social media is here, whether or not you like it. And whether or not you like it, if you own or run a business, you’re involved.

And whether or not you choose to become involved can determine how your business will be judged by others. And it’s that judgement (by others) that may, at some point further down the track, determine the ultimate success, or otherwise, of your business ventures.

I recently spoke with the owner of one small business who told me that he’s banned access to Facebook and Twitter for his employees. On the one hand, I understand his motivations: he wants his employees to, while they’re at work, be focused on the tasks and duties that he’s assigned them to perform and complete. Let’s face it: they’re at work to do their jobs, and not goof off chatting to their friends on Facebook all day.

Twitter

But what about the situation where somebody – somebody who’s external to his organisation, but a customer of his – says something that relates to his products or services? What was said may be good, or it may be bad, but by not being proactive in the management of this, he is running a very big risk of letting things get said that might not be accurate or complimentary, and eventually may lead to problems in his business.

Let’s look at a couple of examples that I saw this week …

During the week I had cause to visit a bank and deal with a teller. Yes, I know, that’s becoming an increasing rare event, which is partly why it was notable.

But what was even more notable was the professional attitude and helpfulness of the teller in question. He went well and truly over and above the level of service that I expected, and offered me a little advice and service that I found to be surprising and unique.

It’s sad that this level of service is so rare these days that when you do get it, it stands out so much, but that’s how it is. I think it’s also important to catch people being exceptional …

Upon leaving the bank, I issues a tweet, acknowledging the good service, mentioning the name of the teller, and the bank’s name. A little while later, I noticed that the bank had replied to my tweet, asking for details of which of their branches I was at, so that they could pass on my comments.

I thought that this was a great use of the medium: through the use of social media, the bank’s employee could have his exemplary behaviour acknowledged. This was a great outcome, and I applaud St George Bank for the manner in which this was handled.

At the same time as that good news story was happening, I’d tweeted about the very bad behaviour of Australia Post, who persist in delivering junk mail despite the very clear request of the recipient – me – to not deliver such unwanted, unrequested, rubbish.

Let’s understand the problem here first: my letterbox has a very clear and distinct label on it that says “NO JUNK MAIL”. If you don’t understand that message, then kindly leave the room.

But despite that very clear label, Australia Post persists in disrespecting my wishes, and delivering unsolicited advertising material. Yes, advertising material.

And I know that it’s Australia Post delivering this crap, because the advertisers have told me that (a) they contract with Australia Post to deliver their materials, and that (b) they’ve instructed Australia Post to respect the wishes of their prospect customers and not deliver these materials where such a “No junk mail” instruction exists.

But yet, Australia Post persists in disrespecting those who are paying for this particularly piss-poor service, as well as those to whom they deliver this unwanted crap, in spite of their clearly stated intentions.

So Australia Post responded to my tweet.

Did they ask for details of the problem? No.

Did they apologise? You’re kidding, right?

No, they went off on a tangent, totally defensive, and explained to me at great length that they can and will deliver certain articles of unsolicited material, in spite of a recipient’s stated desires.

Does the person who posted those tweets truly think that they’re actually helping the matter by making excuses?

Does this person truly believe that I care?

No, I do not.

The problem is that I’m getting crap delivered into my letter box. Crap that I have no desire to receive.

And no, I am not interested iun bullshit excuses, thank you very much.

The correct approach is not to make excuses. It’s not correct to try to justify your behaviour; that only exacerbates the problem.

Rather, ask about the problem, take control and ascertain the facts. Instead, they just made excuses, and made me even more angry. I have no interest in excuses. Find out the facts, and then fix the bloody problem!

To the person from AusPost who issued those tweets, here’s a message: people don’t care about how you think you can justify this shitty behaviour on your part. That you may be able to deliver some crap is wrong in any case, and should not be used to try to justify your already untenable position.

But more significantly, and to the point: you were arguing with me on Twitter. You were not paying attention to what I was saying, which was adding even more disrespect towards me on your part than had already occurred. Your job, on Twitter, is not to argue with me, but to listen, and then to try to manage the process.

You failed.

Miserably so.

You gave a wonderful example of how to mishandle social media interaction with your clients, and as such, you would have better off to just have shut up. That would have caused far less damage.

During the year we get to look at lots and lots of different gadgets, technologies, and concepts.

Mostly they’re good, in that they do exactly what they’re supposed to be doing, with not too many drawbacks.

Occasionally, they’re better than good: they might exceed our expectations, or perhaps open up new paradigms. Occasionally, they might even blow us away.

And sometimes …. well, sadly, they fail. In some, or in many, ways. Poor design, or an ill-thought concept. or maybe it just doesn’t work. Perhaps the pricing regime is just so totally wrong.

Windows ME or Vista could be regarded as turkeys of yore.

And so today, with the American holiday of Thanksgiving giving rise to the consumption of so many turkeys, we at your favourite Gadget Grill, feel that we should make mention of a few of this year’s turkeys.

In no particular order …

Consider the Nokia N8. Nokia keep telling us how good a camera it has. Fine; I have a gaggle of great cameras for when I want to take photos; having a camera in my phone is merely a convenience issue. Hey, Nokia: it’s a P-H-O-N-E. If you can pardon the pun, focus, guys!

Samsung, for their pricing policy on the Galaxy Tab. For about Au$1000 you can buy an iPad rival that’s smaller and has less apps. Yes, you could use it as a phone, but that’s a bloody big handset! Yes, it has a camera, and that is great functionality, but no, the Tab is not good value at $1000. It’s truly a great device, but it really needs to undercut the market leader – the iPad – in price, in order to make its mark on the market. $600-$700, please.

Brother’s range of multi-function printers come in for a Gadget Grill Turkey Award: they have truly turkey eligible firmware in these devices. Let’s look at this logically: these devices perform a wonderful range of tasks: they print, fax, photocopy, and scan, and they are also a phone and answering machine. But think about this: the printer section runs out of ink, one colour … any colour …. doesn’t matter what it is. Now, somebody rings you up and leaves a message on the answering machine. So, in order to retrieve that message on the answering machine, you need to replace the empty ink cartridge!

I’m sorry, but that is just plain stupid. The need to replace the ink cartridge has absolutely nothing to do with the answering machine functionality, and whoever the idiot is that designed that sort of idiotic functionality deserves to be taken out with the turkeys and …. fired!

The Sony Move comes in as a turkey for being too little, too late, and being a me-too device while not being too good at it anyway.

The Austalian Tax Office’s excellent e-Tax software, available now for the PC platform for about ten years or so, is still not available for that ever increasing group in the population that chooses to use a platform other than Windows, Computerworld Australia reported earlier this week.

In that article, James Hutchinson mentioned that the ATO was suggesting that those users not working with a supported (ie Microsoft Windows) operating system but wishing to use the e-Tax system should install Windows on either a virtual machine, or use a utility like Boot Camp, and run Windows within that environment.

Of course, in order to do that, and regardless of whether they’re using a VM or Boot Camp, each user would need to go out and purchase a license for that Windows installation. Further, if a Mac user was to use VMWare’s Fusion, a further license cost would need to be incurred in the purchase of that software too.

Which raises the question: if that is your only need for those pieces of software, shouldn’t your purchase cost, for those licenses, be tax deductible?

My enquiries with the ATO basically confirmed this position. If your only use of the Windows license is to enable you to run Windows in order for you to complete your e-Tax return, then the cost of your license may be fully deductible.

If you were going to to use your Windows license for other purposes, then the cost would need to be apportioned.

Please note that this is not tax advice. You are advised to seek the help of a professional tax consultant in order to determine your own personal situation.

It’s the Christmas season and if you’re like us, you still haven’t gotten out there and into the throng that is the Christmas shoppers.

On this episode of The Gadget Grill, we’ll be talking about ideas you can grab from the tech & game world that work as last minute gift ideas. Stay tuned for some great tips on how to best spend your bucks!

We’re also road-testing a new mobile internet device from Virgin & Huawei that lets you connect to the web while on the go and connect more people to your connection.

Plus a whole new waterworld, your privacy rights at work, issues with LED traffic lights, the reinvention of the wheel, the gold-plated super expensive Nintendo Wii, plus a whole bunch more. This could only be The Gadget Grill!

Being a few days before Christmas, we made sure all the songs on this show were in the Christmas spirit… though they’re the Christmas song you’ve probably never heard before. Take a peek below at our Christmas playlist:

Kermit Ruffins – Crazy Cool Christmas (from “Havy A Crazy Cool Christmas”)

Next week is our last episode of the year so we’ll be taking a look back at the best tech of the year. See you then!

We’re talking about online shopping and what you need to be on the lookout for this holiday season. Hackers & scammers are out in full-force this year so we’re talking to Symantec’s David Hall to hear how you can protect yourself when you’re online and shopping.

We’ll also get Snoop Doggy Dogg to guide our cars, find out how to make an invisibility cloak a complete and utter waste of money, and interrupt Facebook with our own wedding tweets.

All that and more on this episode of The Gadget Grill!

Security is everywhere these days. It’s in our phones, our computers, and more than ever we need to be careful exactly what we do when we’re online. From Facebook to MySpace to Twitter to everything else, we’re more trustful than ever which is why we here at The Gadget Grill have prepared our biggest security show yet.

We’ve done enough of these things to know that this show is just as important as the others because today we have two experts talking to us about what’s happening in security.

Plus we’ve got news about converting crap to energy (oh yes, it really is what it sounds like), NASA create an almost Star Trek-like tricorder for the iPhone, water on the moon, Windows Mobile Marketplace hacked just as the iPhone was with its own little virus.

All of that and… IT’S LEIGH’S (the host of The Gadget Grill) BIRTHDAY… and you can guess he’s not going to let this recording go by without some cake. Lots of cake. Be there for the cake. Listen for the cake… and the radio show. That’s good too.

The music on this show was a mix of New Orleans and a couple of other bits. If you likes any of it, we’ve got the playlist down below:

Frou Frou – Close Up (from “Breathe In”)

Crowded House – Fall At Your Feet (from “Woodface”)

Dumpstaphunk – Meanwhile… (from “Listen Hear”)

Los Hombres Calientes – Latin Tinge II (from “Vol. 5: Carnival”)

Christian Scott – Died In Love (from “Live At Newport”)

Next week, we’re all about making computers easier for the older generation. Join us next week if you’ve ever wanted to set your grandma or grandpa up with a computer!

This week marks the forty-seventh Gadget Grill show. Now keep that number in mind because we share the number seven with someone else because this week, Windows 7 gets launched.

The follow-up to Microsoft’s Windows Vista – which doesn’t exactly have the best reputation – was launched this week and we were on hand to talk to Microsoft’s Jeff Putt about what’s changed in this new & important release. Plus, we’ll do what no other journalist dare would and ask about Clippy!

We’re also taking a new camera out for a spin. It’s got a touchscreen on the back and an extra screen on the front to make sure you always get those self portraits. Sadly, we can’t guarantee you’ll look like the people in the picture above, but we can give you our thoughts on the new Samsung ST550!

All of that plus celebrity tweeting, new multitouch monitors, electric motorbikes, e-book readers, and more. Oh and laughter. Lots of laughter.

Like music? It’s ok if you say no. We’ve even met some people who were like that. Regardless, if you liked the music we played on this show, the playlist is below to make it easy for you to find the tracks!

So on this show, we’ll be talking to Janice Chaffin from Symantec (the people who make Norton) about some of the ways you can protect yourself as well as what’s going on in the world of Identity Fraud & Theft.

A new gadget has made its appearance in the studio this week with the Flip Mino HD, a pocket video camera that’s arriving just in time for Christmas. We’ll be talking about this great little thing that we don’t want to give back in the show.

We’ve also got lots of news including a possible sighting of the lost city of Atlantis off the coast of Greece, the new Olympic medals, and copyright fees for ringtones. All that plus the host going barking mad and more this week on The Gadget Grill. Woof.

We play lots of music on the Gadget Grill, but sadly can’t include it all in our podcast. But if you liked any of what you heard in our show, here’s the listing of what it all was…

Amazon’s famed e-reader for books has been announced for the rest of the world which means it’s on its way to Australia. This is great news for anyone who wants to bring their books around with them in a digital format.

But what are the costs for Australians buying books in the digital format? We found it out before anyone else last week so we’ll report to you about what you’ll currently have to pay for a digital book, and why that’s different from Americans.

We’ll also give you our opinion on the Wacom Bamboo with touch capability… because we’ve been putting our greasy hamburger-ridden fingers all over it because, well, that’s what we’re supposed to do!

All of that plus news about mobile problems, when Rupert met Google, new types of clouds, and even news on Windows 8 just as Windows 7 prepares to launch!

Like the sound of any of the songs we played? Here they are…

Colour – Those Things That Mean So Much (I’ve Had Enough) (from “The Grey EP”)

Mayer Hawthorne – Shiny & News (from “A Strange Arrangement”)

Thelonious Monk – Round Lights (from “Alone In San Francisco”)

Next week, there’s more random gadgety goodness so join us then… same gadget time (9pm), same gadget channel (Radio 2RDJ)… The Gadget Grill!

<itunes:summary>Amazon's famed e-reader for books has been announced for the rest of the world which means it's on its way to Australia. This is great news for anyone who wants to bring their books around with them in a digital format.

But what are the costs for Australians buying books in the digital format? We found it out before anyone else last week so we'll report to you about what you'll currently have to pay for a digital book, and why that's different from Americans.

We'll also give you our opinion on the Wacom Bamboo with touch capability... because we've been putting our greasy hamburger-ridden fingers all over it because, well, that's what we're supposed to do!

All of that plus news about mobile problems, when Rupert met Google, new types of clouds, and even news on Windows 8 just as Windows 7 prepares to launch!

Like the sound of any of the songs we played? Here they are...

Colour - Those Things That Mean So Much (I've Had Enough) (from "The Grey EP")
Mayer Hawthorne - Shiny & News (from "A Strange Arrangement")
Thelonious Monk - Round Lights (from "Alone In San Francisco")
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Along Came Betty (from "Moanin'")
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave. - Orleans and Claiborne (from "5 Songs Live EP ")

Next week, there's more random gadgety goodness so join us then... same gadget time (9pm), same gadget channel (Radio 2RDJ)... The Gadget Grill!</itunes:summary>

On this episode of The Gadget Grill, we’ll talk to Elgato, makers of the EyeTV software & hardware for Apple computers to hear about how software infringement as well as intellectual property is handled from the perspective of a company on the frontlines fighting it.

Plus we’ve got these… weird… tripod like things in the studio… taking us over and making it seem like there are aliens among us… shining light at us. We’re looking at the Gorillapod Focus and the Gorillatorch in this show… or they’re looking at us. One of them. We’re not really sure.

All that plus ways to recycle your phone, the new training wheel, random Apple news including multi-touch gestures, and a hell of a lot more. Plus an insane amount of disturbing things happening behind the microphone. It’s just one of those shows.

Tonight’s playlist:

The Portland Cello Project – Beat (Health, Life and Fire) (from “The Thao and Justin Power Sessions”)

Big Brother & The Holding Company – Turtle Blues (from “Cheap Thrills”)

Stevie Ray Vaughan – Leave My Girl Alone (from “In Step”)

Dave Brubeck – Blue Shadows In The Street (from “Time Further Out”)
