WeeklyAndroid Leading Way in Phone OS Battle
https://www.gadgetgrill.com.au/android-leading-way-in-phone-os-battle/
Sun, 10 Jul 2011 11:21:25 +0000http://www.gadgetgrill.com.au/?p=2174Recent figures suggest that Google’s Android phone operating system is now leading the pack in the US.
Comscore reports that as at the end of May 2011, the Android OS was occupying 38.1% of the market, ahead of Apple’s iOS with 26.6%.
RIM’s share was 24.7%, which, while seemingly good, was in fact down by about 4% from the previous month, and Microsoft’s share was also down, by almost 2%, to just 5.8%.

Blackberry Smoothie

Sun, 24 Oct 2010 10:45:58 +0000http://www.gadgetgrill.com.au/2010/10/24/blackberry-smoothie/Earlier this week RIM showed us their latest entry into the very competitive phone market, the Blackberry Torch. I’ve got to say that I’m impressed.
At last we have a Blackberry phone that I could live with. And at the Gadget Grill, I think it’s fair to describe this phone as a real Blackberry Smoothie.
First of all, it’s quite a compact phone. Significantly shorter than, say, an iPhone or a HTC Desire, its compact form (and nice feel in the hand) makes it a very comfortable phone to hold, carry and use.
But despite its compact form factor, the screen is big – especially for a Blackberry – bright and beautiful. While there’s an on screen keyboard, the screen also slides up and reveals the usual Blackberry QWERTY keyboard as well. This is nicely designed, and very well executed.
Blackberry Torch
Whereas the touch screen requires just a light touch to activate any on-scene controls, the buttons below the screen are actually physical buttons requiring a firmer push than I initially expected. This is not an issue at all; merely an observation. It took me but a few moments to become accustomed to this usage.
As a phone, the Torch performs as well as all of the other phones released this year. I’d really expect nothing less.
And bearing a 5 megapixel camera and a plethora of built-in apps and functionality, it performs a whole host of other tasks in a very competent manner. Battery life is great, too.
While it’s fair to say that I’ve not played with every Blackberry model ever made, I have seen most of them, and this is the first one that I think I’d be happy to have sitting in my pocket, day in, day out.

Traffic Sensitive Billboards
https://www.gadgetgrill.com.au/traffic-sensitive-billboards/
Sun, 12 Sep 2010 11:24:01 +0000http://www.gadgetgrill.com.au/?p=1673Research In Motion, the people who bring us the Blackberry, have been busy working on sensitive billboards by the roadside. No, they’re not going to make billboards that will listen to you when nobody else seems to care, but, by using technology that detects how many mobile phones there are in a particular area, and how quickly those phones are moving, they can then make the content of roadside billboards react to the passing traffic in a sensible and logical manner.
For instance, if traffic is light and moving swiftly, the messages being displayed may be brief and to the point.
But if that passing traffic is heavy and slow moving, then the messages may contain more and greater detail, or be more informative than might otherwise be the case.
