A flute concerto written by Vivaldi has been discovered in the National Archives in Scotland. Il Gran Mogol was written in the early 1730’s as a part of the national concertos, but has not been performed since the 1700’s. The manuscripts vanished shortly after his 1741 passing.
Andrew Woolley, a research fellow at Southampton University, had his curiousity aroused when he noticed this work listed in the archive’s online catalogue. Upon investigating the work’s provenance, he found a reference to the work with it being listed in the sale catalogue of an 18th-century Dutch bookseller.
Earlier this week an excerpt from the concerto was played in the National Archives building in Edinburgh by Scottish flautist John Hall.
