What Are The Odds?

Of getting a different sort of payout from your friendly local ATM? Pretty good, it would seem.

At the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas this week, Barnaby Jack introduced conference attendees to a new form of slot machine: the ATM!

He started by accessing a Tranax maching, using a network and bypassing the machine’s security systems. Having gotten that far, he installed hacks that allowed the machine to collect PINs and account numbers, or, with the use of a specially coded card, he was able to demonstrate the machine spitting out cash like a slot machine spits out coins.

Using a Triton machine he was able to firstly open the machine using a key commonly available for about US$10, and then, using a USB stick, installed malware and infected the machine.
